Section Scholarship Program for 2012-2013 Announced

ASQ Section 1208 is now accepting applications for its 2012-2013 Scholarship Program. A one-time scholarship will be awarded to the selected Nominee of the Richard A Maass Scholarship and to the selected Candidate of the Section Scholarship, from conforming entries post-marked by 5-March-2012. Scholarship Committee Description

Purpose
To administer two, one-time, monetary scholarship awards presented by ASQ Section 1208 each year.

The Richard A Maass Memorial Scholarship
A one-time Scholarship Monetary Award awarded each year to one selected Nominee from the recommended applications received from graduating seniors at local High School and local Community College students in the Fox Valley section' area, pursuing a college degree the next academic year at an accredited University or four-year College.

Since its inception in 1990-1991 academic year, the Scholarship has been awarded every academic year to honor Richard A. Maass.

Terms of the Scholarship

  • A one-time Monetary Award (presently $2,000) for one selected Nominee.
  • The Monetary Award is sent directly to the Nominee’s University or College, after the Nominee is enrolled and starts attending classes.
  • The Selected Scholarship Nominee should be a Graduating Senior from one of the local High Schools or a student attending a local Community College.
  • Applications are only accepted from students selected and recommended by the participating local High School or Community College.
  • Only completed applications with the required supporting documents, submitted as a complete package by the school or community college, will be considered for scholarship review.
  • Applications for scholarship from individual students are not accepted.
  • Time Line

  • In early December, letters informing local high schools and community colleges that the scholarship is available and the application deadline (postmarked the first Monday in March), along with the Application Form, Application Requirements, and a brief history of the Fox Valley Section #1208 are mailed.
  • In early March, completed (only) application and document packages received from local high schools and community colleges and postmarked the first Monday in March or earlier are compiled. Incomplete and late packages are discarded.
  • In March and April the Scholarship Committee reviews the qualified applications and document packages.
  • In late April, at least two weeks before the Fox Valley section's May meeting date, the Scholarship Committee selects the Scholarship Nominee to whom the award will be presented.
  • After the Scholarship Nominee is selected, the Scholarship Committee Chair informs the selected Nominee verbally and in writing. Note: As a condition for acceptance of the Scholarship, the Nominee is asked to give permission to print his or her essay on quality in the Fox Valley Section Newsletter and Web-Site, and to be released to local newspapers and other media at the discretion of the Fox Valley Section 1208.
  • The selected Nominee is informed that the Scholarship Award Money will be sent directly to the selected Nominee’s University or College after he or she is enrolled and begins attending classes.
  • The Scholarship Committee Chair invites the selected Nominee and her or his parents to attend the section meeting in May to be to be recognized by section members and awarded a Certificate of Recognition.
  • Selection and Recognition Process
    The Nominee is selected based on how well the Candidate excels on the criteria listed below in rank order of importance:

    1. Article on Quality, minimum of 500 words on the importance of quality products and / or services to the future of our country
    2. Volunteer Work
    3. Extracurricular Activities
    4. ACT and / or SAT Scores
    5. Class Rank
    6. Financial need
    7. Recommendation Letter from an official of the Nominee's High School or Community College

    The ASQ Section 1208 Scholarship

This Scholarship program is open to graduating High School seniors and College students pursuing a college degree the next academic year at an accredited University or four-year College.

    Scholarship Committee The Scholarship Committee:

  • Consists of one Chairperson and two committee members, a size large enough to thoroughly review all applications while small enough to protect the sensitive information in the applications.
  • Meets by teleconference or in person at least twice each year.
  • Submits a verbal or written report annually to the Fox Valley Section 1208 Leadership Committee on the progress of committee’s work.
  • At present, the Scholarship Committee Chair and one other Committee member have been on the Scholarship Committee since its inception in 1990. The third member has been on the Committee for over four years.
